The
Panamanian Folklore is varied. It is mainly observed in the
Central Provinces (Herrera, Los Santos, Cocle and Veraguas).
The typical dress is pollera (for women) and montuno (for
men). There are two types of polleras, pollera montuno (for
labor) and pollera for galas (with laces). With the pollera
for galas, you use fine jewelry; the Panamanian pollera for
galas is one of the most expensive dresses known. Men also
have two types of montunos, for labor and Sunday (gala); the
montuno consists of black pants and white shirt, a straw hat,
cutarras (work shoes made of cow leather used by the Panamanian
peasants) and a bag named chácara. It
is important to indicate that the Panamanian pollera has won
international prizes as best typical dress in the world. The
pollera originates in Spain, used by Spanish women during
the 16th and 17th centuries. There are different typical dances,
the most popular: The Tamborito, cumbia, tamborera, mejorana,
punto, atravesao, bullerengue, palo de mayo and saracunde
dance. There is also the dance of diablicos, congos and indigenous
dances. For these dances, Panamanians manufacture their own
instruments depending on the type of dance or the indigenous
group.
