Bocas del Toro
The Province of Bocas del Toro is located in the Panamanian Caribbean, west of the country, 30 miles from Panama City. At the present time, it is one of the most beautiful and visited tourist places of Panama, discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1502, during his fourth and last voyage to the New World. In the past, this site was an important commercial center for marketing cacao and banana.
A very picturesque town integrated mostly by blacks and Indians, where you can appreciate houses built on piles in the seashore representing an attractive to visitors. The architecture is very peculiar (shows the influence of Caribbean immigrants as well as the United Fruit Company), the houses and hotels have the same wood facade. The locals engage in the growth of banana and fishing. It is an archipelago composed of six major islands and some minor islands. The biggest and most civilized island is Colon Island. Here you can enjoy excellent restaurants, ecotourism centers, bars and discotheques. It is very easy and cheap to get transportation to the other islands or beaches of crystalline water and fine white sand, such as: Zapatillas Cay, Bastimentos Island, Boca Del Drago, Red Frog, Coral Cay, Carenero, Pajaros Island, Dolphin Bay, to mention some. They have basic tours which include a visit to the Dolphin Bay where you can appreciate these beautiful animals most of the year.
National Marine Park - Bastimentos Island. It is located east of the City of Bocas del Toro, with an approximate area of 13,000 hectares. Most of the island is inside the National Marine Park. Its remote location offers in the Caribbean an ideal refuge for species in danger of extinction. In the island you can find several small lodgings and restaurants with good service and comfort. Inside the Marine Park of Bastimentos, you will find Zapatillas Cay (from an airplane they resemble two big footsteps), small islands where you can enjoy different activities such as fishing and diving in its spectacular coral reefs and crystalline waters. In the west part of the island, you can observe the occasional refuge of scientists investigating the migration of four species of turtles (green turtles, baula turtles and hawksbill sea turtles) where they arrive to hatch their eggs in these beaches from March to September.
La Isla de los Pájaros, is also part of the beauties offered by Bocas del Toro. It is an important place where you can observe a great amount of bird species (depending on the season, approximately 50 different species) that migrate between North and South America. The island is formed by big rocks, mostly covered by leafy tropical vegetation; the nests visibly clear from a boat at sea. Other marine birds, such as the pelican and seagulls, remain for some time in the cays.

The Region of San Blas is located northeast of Panama, with a territorial extension of approximately 3,206 square kilometers and extends from the limits with the Province of Colon to the frontier with the Republic of Colombia. It is an archipelago composed of 365 islands and it is the least exploited place of Panama. Most of the 20,000 Kuna Indians live in only 52 of the nearest costal islands. The Kuna General Council is the supreme authority and is composed by Indian chieftains named general sahilas. A governor, representing the Panamanian government, also participates. There is a General Congress of the Kuna Culture, an entity in charge of the conservation and propagation of the historic patrimony of the people.
